Evolution in PokéRogue usually happens after a Pokémon meets its required condition. Most normal level-based evolutions work as expected, but some methods are changed to fit a roguelite run. Trade evolutions use a Linking Cord, evolution items appear in the reward pool, and some Pokémon also need friendship, a specific move, the correct time of day or a particular form.

1. Standard Level-Up Evolutions

Most Pokémon with a normal level requirement evolve automatically when they level up. You do not need a separate item for these evolutions.

Some Pokémon have simplified or changed level requirements in PokéRogue. Others need an additional condition, such as knowing a particular move or leveling up during day or night. For example, Piloswine must reach at least level 33 while knowing Ancient Power, while Primeape must reach at least level 35 while knowing Rage Fist.

Simple rule: If the Pokémon does not evolve at the level you expected, do not assume the game is broken. Check whether it also needs a move, time condition or different evolution method.

2. Evolution Stones and Special Items

Pokémon that evolve with a stone or special item do not evolve just by gaining more levels. The correct item must appear as a reward during the run, and you must choose it for the eligible Pokémon.

Eevee can use stones such as the Water Stone, Thunder Stone, Fire Stone, Leaf Stone or Ice Stone for several of its evolutions.
Doublade evolves into Aegislash with a Dusk Stone.
Dusclops evolves into Dusknoir with a Reaper Cloth.
Ursaring evolves into Ursaluna with a Peat Block in PokéRogue; a full moon is not required.

Evolution items can enter the reward pool only when a Pokémon that can use one is currently in your party. Their chance of appearing increases as the run progresses, so you may need to continue playing or reroll rewards.

For branching evolution lines, such as Eevee, check the Dex first to avoid choosing the wrong branch for your team.

3. Trade Evolutions Use a Linking Cord

You do not need another player to complete trade evolutions in PokéRogue. Pokémon that normally evolve by trading instead use the Linking Cord, which can appear as an evolution reward item.

Some Linking Cord evolutions have an extra requirement. For example, Onix and Scyther must know a Steel-type move, while Karrablast and Shelmet depend on whether the opposite species has been caught or hatched. Check the exact Pokémon entry before using the item.

4. Friendship Evolutions

Friendship works differently from Candy Friendship. For evolution, the important value is the Pokémon's standard Friendship during the current run.

Participating in a successful battle increases Friendship.

A Soothe Bell increases Friendship gains by 50%.

Friendship requirements are generally lower in PokéRogue than in the mainline games. Pichu, Riolu, Golbat and several other Pokémon use this method. Some also require the correct time of day or a move.

5. Time, Move and Form Requirements

Some evolutions happen only when several conditions are true at the same time. The most common extra conditions are:

Time of day: day, night, dawn or dusk in the current game area.
Known move: the Pokémon must have a specific move in its current moveset.
Form or ability: the Pokémon must be in a particular form or have a particular ability.
Previous unlock: you may need to have caught or hatched another Pokémon at least once.

The time condition uses the time shown in the current area of the run. Your real-world clock and the weather do not control the evolution.

Cubone evolves into Marowak during day or Alolan Marowak during night at level 28.
Rockruff with Own Tempo evolves into Dusk Form Lycanroc regardless of the current time.
Wurmple evolves into Silcoon during day or Cascoon during night at level 7 in PokéRogue.

6. Unique Evolution Requirements

A small number of Pokémon have a condition that does not fit the main categories. Gimmighoul, for example, evolves into Gholdengo after it levels up once the player has collected 10 points from qualifying money items while Gimmighoul is in the party.

Are Mega Evolution and Gigantamax Normal Evolutions?

No. Mega Evolution, Primal Reversion and Gigantamax are form changes rather than normal evolution stages.

Mega Evolution requires a Mega Bracelet and the Pokémon's matching Mega Stone.
Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon require a Mega Bracelet plus the Blue Orb or Red Orb.
Gigantamax requires a Dynamax Band and Max Mushrooms.

These forms do not automatically disappear when the Pokémon switches out. They remain active until you revert the form from the team menu or choose another available form.
